<description>There is an old saying, 'never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence.' In the case of 9/11, I think it's pretty clear that the Bush Administration had blinders on, but had blinders on not because they hoped bin Laden would attack but, rather, because they considered bin Laden a nuisance out in the Afghan hinterland rather than a real threat to America (Condi Rice's response to Richard Clark, when Clark pushed the issue of Osama, was that the Clinton Administration had an "Osama Obsession" and she wasn't going to buy into it).

But for Iraq, there's plenty of evidence now that malice *was* intended. The Bush Administration didn't misinterpret the intelligence. They willfully manufactured the intelligence they wanted to be true. Whether this is because they are a bunch of delusional fanatics, or because they're a bunch of malevolent ogres, the result is the same: we were lied into a war.

Reminds me of another time this happened. Read up on "Gulf of Tonkin incident" and get back to me. That one ended up with over 50,000 dead Americans and 2,000,000 dead Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians. But we have time. We're going to be in Iraq for the next 10 years... how many will die for Bush's lies? We will find out. And may God help us all.
